What happens to a shipping container after we collect it

People often ask where their old container ends up. The answer depends on the state it is in when we collect it.

A unit that is no longer wanted in one place can still be useful somewhere else. Where that is not possible, the steel can be recovered. There are three routes it can take.

Used again

Once finished with, many units can be sold on and used again by another person or business. One with sound doors, roof and floor still has plenty to offer as storage.

They are used for all kinds of storage, from garden equipment to business stock and site materials. A unit that has come to the end of its time with you may suit someone else well.

Refurbished

Some are worth repairing and repainting so they can go back into use. A fresh coat of paint can make a big difference to how it looks and how well it is protected.

Refurbishment can include repairs to panels, doors and floors as well as repainting. That gives it a longer working life rather than sending it straight for scrap.

Scrapped and recycled

Anything beyond reuse is scrapped, and its steel can be recycled.

One with rust holes through the roof and walls, a failing floor or a damaged frame is usually past repair. Scrapping it means the steel is recovered rather than left to deteriorate on your land.

Why this matters for cost

The route it takes after collection is linked to what you pay. One that can be reused may be collected free or bought from you. One that can only be scrapped is more likely to carry a disposal cost. Read more about selling your container.

Where we buy one, the amount is agreed with you first.

The same applies to cabins

Portable cabins, site offices and welfare units follow a similar pattern. Depending on their condition, they may be reused, refurbished or scrapped, and that again shapes whether you pay, removal is free or we buy the unit. See our portable cabin removal page.

Find out which applies to you

Send us photos of each side, the doors, the inside and the floor, with the postcode, through our quote form. We will tell you which outcome applies before anything is booked. You can also read about scrap shipping containers.
